Today it finally happened, our beloved hamster Iggy died. Iggy has been acting a little off for the last week so we started bracing the kids over the last few days. Caitlyn reacted in her typical matter of fact way …."whatever, we're going to get a cat anyways….". Erin also reacted in her typical way and has been sobbing herself to sleep for the last 3 days. Yes, Iggy was a rodent but he was her rodent, her first pet and she loved him.
So now I sit here at 1:30 in the afternoon with a dead hamster still in his cage. Trying to figure out what to do. Do I pack him up in a box so that it is all ready for when Erin gets home or do I leave him hoping that she won't notice until after her swimming lessons tonight. I have a shoebox picked out and will fill it with shavings and some of his favourite treats then bury him in the backyard. How do I bury it deep enough so that the critters won't get at him? Can you imagine? Erin would go so far off the emotional deep end she would never recover. 🙁
So if you drive by tonight and see a strange ceremony going on in the backyard you'll know what is going on and are welcome to join us to lay a flower on his little box then join me for a glass of wine (might just be vodka tonight……why do these things always happen when Dave is out of the country!)
We love you Iggy – You were a great hamster!

Aidan says “Aw, Iggy is really cute. I wish he was still alive so I could see him moving.”
I went through the same thing last night around this time. We had a Teddy Bear Hampster named “Butterscotch”.
It really was my oldest first pet that she had picked out.
We knew it was coming but it was hard to prepare the girls. I held him as he took his last breathe. ( I was a mess – Emotional Mommy )
We buried him all together and visit him often.
So sorry for your loss. As small as these rodents are they seem to have a big tug on our hearts!
Thanks guys – many tears have been shed over this little guy.
