The last two weeks have been CRAZY busy and I have all kinds of wonderful stories and photos to share. The first part is the saga of Caitlyn's Birthday Cake. We hosted 16 little kids on Saturday to celebrate Caitlyn's 6th birthday. Yep 16 is a lot but I have always embraced large parties not wanting to leave anyone out and it is only 2 hours out of my life after all. 🙂
Caitlyn requested a Fish party this year – not a Nemo party – a tropical fish party. That made me think a little. How do you do a fish theme? Lucky for us the weather held out and we were able to let them loose outside. We set up a large obstacle course in the backyard complete with tires, tunnels, balance beams and slides for the kids to race through. That, as well as turns on the trampoline, freeze dance and the traditional pinata made for a great Birthday Party.
The challenge to me was how to build the cake. I am not a baker and usually this problem is solved with a quick trip to the store. But the request was made for a Fish cake quickly followed by a "you can do it mommy" and what could I do but attempt to build a puffer fish cake.
So here it goes for Anyone who might decide to try it for themselves:
2 – 9 x 13's for the base – Iced blue for the ocean. I am not going to try and explain how two cakes from two exactly the same sized pans can come out two entirely different sizes. But I kept telling myself it worked because it looked like waves.
The puffer fish body was made from a ball shaped cake pan and tiny loaf pan. The pans are available to be borrowed in anyone ever needs them. 🙂
Puffer fish pieces – I froze them before icing to help contain the crumbs and it really worked.
Puffer fish body – pre yellow icing.
Pretzels for the spines – fins side and tail were attached with candy skewers.
He definitely has a personality all his own 🙂
My big girl Caitlyn loved it.
Caitlyn helped me make rice krispie skewers for loot bags. The rice krispies were drizzled in pink chocolate and decorated with smarties. Yep – definitely a sugar buzz going on here. Wind them up and send them home. :)
Under Grandma Glassford's Watchful Eye
The Fish pinata before it went to it's natural death. 🙂
Caitlyn opening gifts with big sister helper – baby sitter in Training, yikes 🙁 and friend Olivia and my best mommy – couldn't possibly think of having a party without her – friend Tammy. Thanks Tammy – You're Amazing!

Some great party ideas, Patty! looks like fun!
Thanks Bethany – I now have 15 birthday parties under my belt. Still think the best was the great Dinosaur party when Caitlyn turned 3. A pile of preschoolers digging in the dirt for dinosaurs … it was a blast. Erin it is hard to say but they were all large and indoors – maybe that is why they are a blur 🙂
