There are many times when as a mom I feel like I have let my kids down. You know those times …. when as a baby you forget to test the bottle and it is a tad bit too hot or forgetting to send that special item to school when I promised I would remember. Or those horrible times as a parent when you just have to do the right thing like holding your kids down for blood work needles or letting them cry themselves to sleep. 🙁
All of those things I can manage but the one that really bothers me is that we cannot get our kids a pet. I had pets, Dave had pets, my kids would love a dog or two and many many cats but unfortunately allergies restrict us. Not to say we haven't tried. We found an adorable 1 year old black lab and brought her into our home only to have Caitlyn's asthma kick in. Talk about a heart breaking day – the day that we had to return sweet Belle to her family. I know that there are many hypoallergenic breeds out there but we just aren't ready to risk another dog right now.
So we have discarded the concept of normal family pets and accepted that we will end up with a house full of lizards (not yet), fish (haven't figured out how to keep them alive) and a hamster.
Thus the blog.
The girls have one pet who is the sweetest little thing. Yes, I agree, I never thought I would say that about a rodent but he is really sweet. He squeaks and chats and snuggles and is really quite a delight. He has not run off on us once which I take as a sign that he likes us to. 🙂
Anyways…I took him for a run on the front porch this morning and for the typical pet family portrait with Erin. He hasn't been running as often on his wheel lately and we are starting to get concerned that he might be getting a little old so definitely wanted a portrait. Why should a hamster be any different from a dog or cat. They only live for about 2 years (life span is usually determined by how aggressive the family cat is so who knows maybe he'll live for longer). It is important that the girls have a picture to remember him by.
So, let me present Iggy the Teddy Bear Hamster!
