The sure fire sign that summer is half over is the arrival of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week – an eagerly awaited annual event in this household.  Yesterday the girls decided to create watermelon shark to celebrate all things shark 🙂  Hysterical really, they had the jaws theme playing in the background and had a blast.
Step 1.
Wash your watermelon. Â Slice the bottom off on a big of an angle so that the watermelon sits upright leaning slightly. Â Cut a slice out of the top for the mouth. Â Save this slice because it will be used for the fin. Â Then carefully peel the green watermelon skin off all around the mouth leaving the white behind. Â This is the part that takes the most time.
Step 2: Â Scoop out the red part of the watermelon cleaning out the inside entirely.
Step 4.  Once the watermelon has been completely cleaned out cut little triangles for teeth.  Then carefully carve circles for the two eyes.  The girls then used toothpicks to attach blue chocolate wafers as eyeballs (according to them chocolate is a necessary ingredient in absolutely everything 😉
Step 5:  Using the piece of watermelon that you cut out for the mouth – cut it in half so that it is a triangle.  The cut will need to be curved slightly to fit tightly against the watermelon.  Use toothpicks and attach the piece of watermelon to the shark’s back to make the dorsal fin.  Then fill the watermelon with the scooped fruit.  The girls filled their creation with watermelon, grapes and topped them off with gummy dolphins and fish. 🙂
