Many wonder why March always brings this new “deer in the headlights” look to my eyes. It is entirely because we near the end of figure skating season. I know that all hockey parents out there understand the daily grind of sitting in the cold arenas (couldn’t they turn the heaters on for just a short period of time – Really I understand economic cutbacks but come on – I’ll throw you the loonie for the heat!!). Lessons end the end of February to make room for CARNIVAL. Yep, the Skate Canada Orangeville puts on a huge skating show every March and the girls LIVE for it. Practices 4x a week (2 kids x 2 practises), learning a performance ready routine in a ridiculously short period of time, costume fittings, the dramatic hairstyling in the change room, denying the minute by minute requests for candy from the snack bar (Do they really need to have the snack bar open during every rehearsal !!!!!) It is all set up to drive a mom batty.
But we have come to the end. Last night I survived 6 hours at the arena for the final dress rehearsal and today is the big day.
I have my checklist ready to go:
Skates, costume, hairbrush, etc. (2 sets, 2 skating bags)
puffers, bandaids, hairpins, mascara (all possible in case of emergency items 🙂
Fast easily prepared dinner that will not cause indigestion or the noise to wrinkle for two excited and overtired kids (and parents)
Blackberrys charged for communication between parents as we get lost in the ocean of other parents.
Bottle of wine to sink into the couch with after it is all over.
No plans for Sunday whatsover – absolutely non negotiable. 😉
The girls are so incredibly excited, exhausted (as you can see by the circles under their eyes) and ready to go. Dave and I, both battling colds for about a month now (funny – same amount of time as carnival rehearsals …. could it be emotionally induced 😉 will cheer the loudest, hope hope hope that they don’t fall, hope that if they do fall that they get right back up wave to the crowd and keep going and most importantly have a fabulous time.
